In figuration, my process usually starts from a combined effort of imagination and research. This results in the use of imaginative imagery and elements that evoke spirituality, the occult, nature, and celestial bodies.
In the face of the unprecedented times we are experiencing, I also create figurative work that depicts tango dancers, to highlight the beauty and enriching element that immigrants contribute to any society they join. It is something that has come naturally as most of my work is heavily informed by music. I use the work I make to bring attention to the current persecution of immigrants and asylum seekers. My tango scenes seek to serve as a reminder of the beauty and enrichment that immigrants bring to any community. It highlights the history of tango: a dance that emerged from within the early immigrant and freed slave population in Argentina during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century . It was and is a dance that serves as a reminder of the rich cultural diversity and sacrifice that envelopes the immigrant identity. I hope to help serve in the engagement of commentary about the current state of marginalization of the migrant population in the current socio-political systems.
My work depicting female figures, seeks to highlight an element of seemingly delicate figures, set up in an atmosphere of spirituality and symbolism and eerie settings leaving the audience questioning their perception.
My process propels my work in figuration beyond the initial impulse. The result is a dynamic interplay of colliding lines, expanses and expressive brushstrokes that I carefully consider as the painting develops.
My figures stand out with clearly defined facial features echoing ancient figures usually placed within nighttime or interior scenes that combine an eeriness and elements of the outside world. I seek to successfully share experiences of vulnerability, displacement, and otherness while critiquing the erasure of women throughout history.
These figures often stare at the viewer, though apparently unconcerned, inviting the viewer to observe the scene.
These figures have often been found to be charmingly comic, impeding any visual association to the eroticism associated with traditional nudes. Yet somehow, they remain sensuous and intriguing.
